Air Malta resumes flights to Madrid after a 10-year hiatus
The national airline Assault Air Malta has opened a new route to Madrid, after last flying to the Spanish capital some 10 years ago.
The first flight to Madrid took place on 4 April, and the airline will now be operating three flights a week to Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas Airport every Monday, Wednesday and Friday.
This summer, the airline plans to operate 125 return flights a week to 18 European destinations, all while aiming to halve its workforce to reduce costs and keep going.
“Our return to the Spanish capital, Madrid, confirms our strategic commitment to connecting the Maltese Islands with major cities and major airports and rich European basins,” said Executive Chairman David Curmi. “We have worked hard on an ambitious flight schedule that demonstrates our strong belief that travel and tourism will return this summer. We have effectively doubled our capacity over the past winter and this new scheduled service is a strong commitment by Air Malta to offer more travel opportunities for both Spaniards and Maltese to visit countries. and build stronger relationships. ”
Chief Commercial Officer Roy Kinnear said the airline was beginning to see signs of recovery following the downturn caused by the Covid-19 pandemic. The company, he added, was striving to strengthen its sales and distribution strategy, signing agreements with key sales representatives and renewing its website and booking engine.
“I am optimistic that these changes, coupled with strong demand for travel next year, will support us to have a great 2022,” Kinnear said.
The new route was also welcomed by Malta’s Ambassador to Spain Daniel Azzopardi, who emphasized that connectivity is a key precondition for effective bilateral relations. Azzopardi said there were encouraging indications of favorable bookings on the new route, and promised that the embassy would seek to build on this momentum.
