The footballers of VfL Wolfsburg are allowed to chill the champagne. After an impressive 6-0 (3-0) win in the Bundesliga summit meeting with FC Bayern Munich on Sunday, the “wolves” are very close to winning the German championship.
The celebrations began well before the final whistle in the VfL Wolfsburg coaching zone and the fans’ title chants echoed through the stadium. They all knew that they would succeed against the big opponent from Munich, who was plagued by Corona. And also what it means. Because after the overwhelming victory, the team of VfL trainer Tommy Stroot can hardly take the title away.
“No one expected us to win 6-0. Now we’re four points ahead and still have to do our homework,” goal scorer Lena Oberdorf told NDR.
With three games to go before the end of the season, VfL are now four points ahead of FC Bayern. Wolfsburg could even afford to lose in the games against SGS Essen, Carl-Zeiss Jena and Bayer Leverkusen.

Huth puts VfL women in the lead with a dream goal
There was no sign of mutual stalking after the kick-off, and the game quickly offered the best entertainment. Wolfsburg’s Svenja Huth provided the first highlight – and how: The national player first rounded her opponents Giulia Gwinn and Lea Schüller with the ball on her right foot, while the ball then went to her left foot and immediately left the edge of the penalty area. The ball hissed into the top right corner of the goal – 1:0 for VfL (8th). A dream goal!
It shouldn’t be the only thing in the first half. After Wolfsburg’s goalkeeper Almuth Schult was right when Jovana Damnjanovic headed the ball (14′) and soon after brilliantly prevented a possible own goal by Tabea Waßmuth (24′), the “wolves” again determined the top game.
Iceland’s Sveindis Jonsdottir controlled the basis for the 2-0 (33rd minute) with a throw-in up to the five-meter corner. Alexandra Popp extended the head, Joelle Wedemeyer nodded the ball.
Waßmuth also hits the corner
The next dream goal followed a little later: Waßmuth picked up the ball well in the Bayern penalty area, turned around and shot it wonderfully into the top right corner of the goal – 3:0 (39th) for VfL. “Wolfsburg was brutally effective,” said national coach Martina Voss-Tecklenburg during the break on NDR: “Bayern’s performance can of course be explained. They lack freshness physically and mentally.”
Popp, Oberdorf and Pajor produce Kantersieg
After the restart, the Munich team tried to turn the game around again. But it was mostly just beginnings. And if it ever went beyond that, Schulth was there. In the end it was a really clear result cosmetically: Popp (77th), Oberdorf (82nd) and Ewa Pajor (90th + 3) screwed the result to 6:0 – the preliminary decision in the fight for the title.
Everything now indicates that the VfL women are taking the first step on the way to the treble they are aiming for. They are also in the semi-finals of the DFB Cup, where they meet Bayern Munich in two weeks, and in the semi-finals of the Champions League. There the defending champion FC Barcelona is the opponent.
