Will England cruise around the US World Cup group? I am rounding off the response of the English press to the 2022 Qatar draw
The draw for the World Cup was made on Friday, and England will face Iran, the USA and Wales, Scotland or Ukraine in the group stage.
After the draw, the response in the English press was largely that Gareth Southgate’s team will have a fairly easy transition to the qualifying round in Qatar.
After England reaching the semi-finals of the 2018 World Cup and qualifying for the Euro 2020 finals, England of course have high expectations that they will go all the way this time, especially with Harry Kane and Raheem Sterling at the peak.
However, there could be a danger that England may be overconfident …
How did the English press react?
On Saturday morning, The Telegraph said England had received a “dream” draw:

The Sun, meanwhile, commented that England’s hopes for World Cup fame had “risen” when it revealed it would play the US and Iran:

The Daily Star also suggested that it would be easy for England to move forward:

The Guardian described the draw as “ideal” for Southgate men:

How did the English press react to the 2010 World Cup draw?
Before the 2010 World Cup, England also won what was considered a favorable draw for the World Cup, as they competed against the USA, Algeria and Slovenia.
The Sun responded with the infamous title “EASY – England, Algeria, Slovenia, Yanks – Best English Band from The Beatles”.
Because we’re on the eve #World CupDrawwe usually look at the rather hubristic response to the 2010 draw in England pic.twitter.com/72MKhX0qjb

However, things did not go according to plan in England. Fabia Capella drew 1-1 with the USA in the opening match of the group, and Rob Green turned, which gave Clint Dempsey a goal.
England then drew with Algeria with 0: 0, and Wayne Rooney immediately after the match criticized the fans, after a barrel of television cameras.
In the end, the three leftists avoided humiliation due to their early exit, beating Slovenia 1-0, but this still meant that they finished 2nd in the group behind the USA. However, England was then defeated by Germany 4-1 in the round of 16.
What is the English record for the World Cup group stage?
England usually break through the group stage at the World Cup, but there were three instances where they failed to advance, most recently in 2014.
Summer | Opponents in group work | Where England ended up in the group | How far England has progressed in the tournament |
1950 | Spain, Chile, United States | 2 | Group phase |
1954 | Switzerland, Italy, Belgium | 1 | Quarterfinals |
1958 | Brazil, Soviet Union, Austria | 3 | Group phase |
1962 | Hungary, Argentina, Bulgaria | 2 | Quarterfinals |
1966 | Uruguay, Mexico, France | 1 | Winners |
1970 | Brazil, Romania, Czechoslovakia | 2 | Quarterfinals |
1982 | France, Czechoslovakia, Kuwait | 1 | Second group stage |
1986 | Morocco, Poland, Portugal | 2 | Quarterfinals |

2002 | Sweden, Argentina, Nigeria | 2 | Quarterfinals |
2006 | Sweden, Paraguay, Trinidad and Tobago | 1 | Quarterfinals |

2014 | Costa Rica, Uruguay, Italy | 4 | Group phase |
2018 | Belgium, Tunisia, Panama | 2 | Semifinals |
What is England’s record compared to the US?
England competed with the USA 11 times and won eight of them.
However, the U.S. famously beat England at the 1950 World Cup, with no team breaking through the team work. In addition, the U.S. won the 1993 U.S. Cup 2-0.
England have won all the friendly matches they have played against the US, most recently 3-0 in 2018, with Jesse Lingard, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Callum Wilson on the record.
