Today in Athens the outgoing entourage of Irini Konitopoulou
The lord of the island song will be buried with lutes and violins in her village, in Kinidaros, Naxos, and as befits the biggest voice of the genre Irini Konitopoulou – Legaki.
However, her family decides, due to the people who want to say goodbye both in Athens, where she lived, and in her particular homeland, Naxos, that two different ceremonies take place, something similar happened in the case of Mikis Theodorakis. So today, Friday, April 1, at 13.00 the exit procession will take place from the Holy Temple of Agios Ioannis Rentis, where the artistic world and those who loved it will say goodbye.
However, the wish of her and her Naxian compatriots is for her to be buried in her village, in Kinidaros, Naxos, where the family grave is located. Thus, the ceremony will take place on Monday, April 4, at Kinidaros, Naxos. Preparations for the traditional ceremony have already begun, as the whole of Naxos will say goodbye with the accompaniment of traditional organ players and folklore associations, which will follow to her last home in the Cemetery of Kynidaros, where the family tomb of the Konitopoulos is located.
Irini Konitopoulou-Legaki was born in 1931 and since the 50’s she has managed to become the most important name in island songs. She was the first to sing uniquely “Armenaki”, “Ston Artemonas”, “Sala giala” and dozens of other songs that went down in history. The news of the death of the great singer shocked the whole artistic world, which had combined the traditional song with the voice of the late Irini Konitopoulou, with “Espresso” revealing the last moments of the mistress-Rhine of the Aegean!
However, the “goodbye” of George Dalaras to the great interpretation through his social media accounts was also shocking. “While we are reconciled to our mortality and somehow consider the losses inevitable, for some reason you do not want to hear that this man has left, that he has said goodbye to us. It made me very sad to hear about this loss. For some strange reason these people who sing like that are immortal. I am lucky and happy, because in the legacy of my soul and mind I have several such people.
Irini Konitopoulou-Legaki was not just a great, a rare singer. It was and is a seal of our country, culture and heritage. And the fact that he never claimed it and remained humble makes it even more important. Especially for us musicians, who are always immortal. And that somewhat mitigates the weight of the loss. The sun has set»Wrote characteristically!
