Electric bicycles must now always be illuminated in Switzerland
From April 1, 2022, e-bikes on the road must also be illuminated during the day.
Anyone who does not comply with the measure, which is intended to make e-bikes more visible and increase safety, risks a fine of 20 francs.
The new regulation requires headlights to be on during the day. Taillights are also recommended. At night, both headlights and taillights were already mandatory and will remain mandatory.
In addition, from April 1, 2024, fast e-bikes with a speedometer must be sold. Those who are already on the road have until April 1, 2027 to retrofit one.
Fast e-bikes are those that go faster than 25 km/h and up to 45 km/h under power. Fast e-bikes must be registered and have yellow license plates. To ride one of these bikes, the rider must have at least an M driver’s license.
Drivers of slow e-bikes (driven no faster than 25 km/h) must be in possession of an M driving license between the ages of 14 and 16. Persons under the age of 14 cannot apply for a driving license and are therefore not permitted to ride e-bikes on public roads in Switzerland.
