Scania sends electric cars to the LKAB mine in Sweden
An electric Scania Heavy Tipper will work in the LKAB mine in Malmberget, in northern Sweden, together with an electric crane truck specially adapted for this mining operation. This will also be used as a test for BEV in the “demanding underground mining environment”.
The heavy dump truck has a total weight including a load of 49 tonnes and is planned to be used to transport residual products. The other truck is equipped with a crane to transport drill steel to underground drilling rigs. The electric crane truck will be charged at the depot, however, mobile charging at the sites will also be made possible to increase flexibility. The partners want to launch the vehicles at LKAB in 2022.
“Electric trucks are part of an ambition to set a new standard for sustainable mining, where fossil-free is used all the way,” says Peter Gustavsson, project manager at LKAB, and adds: “We are moving our fleet away from fossil diesel. And when we test capacity in battery-powered electric vehicles, decisions are made with regard to the choice of trucks that will not only contribute to higher productivity but above all also a more sustainable mine and a safer working environment. ”
