Hiker sits at the Salzburg Untersberg Festival
Even if the weather forecast does not promise hiking weather in the coming days anyway: the Salzburg Mountain Rescue Service is currently warning against going into the mountains without the appropriate equipment.
Only on Tuesday afternoon did the emergency services have to come to the aid of a hiker on the Untersberg in Salzburg for the third time within a few days, who was stuck due to the conditions in the area.
The 21-year-old American had climbed alone from Grödig (Flachgau) towards the summit on the Dopplersteig, which was closed in winter, when he was unable to go any further at an altitude of 1,260 meters due to the snow conditions. Since, according to the police, he no longer dared to turn around, he called the mountain rescue service.
A police helicopter was able to locate the man in the “Obere Rositten” area and dropped three mountain rescuers near him. Since the poorly equipped man refused to be rescued by helicopter for cost reasons, he was accompanied by mountain rescuers on foot into the valley. He was unharmed.
In the days before, mountain rescuers from Grödig am Untersberg had to rescue hikers who had climbed up on the Klingeralm and on the Reitsteig: “Some of the climbs and paths that are still closed are icy and there is still pimply hard snow higher up. This is also very dangerous for the sometimes poorly equipped hikers, last year we also had falls at this time,” warned Manfred Haas, the local manager of Grödig, in a broadcast.
