Tottenham want to pair Sweden midfielder with Kulusevski in summer raid but face Man Utd obstacles
Tottenham have reportedly increased their efforts to bring in Bologna midfielder Mattias Svanberg this summer after finding out an update on the player’s current situation.
The 23-year-old was a target for sports director Fabio Paratici in the transfer window in January, but Spurs ended up instead of landing their Swedish teammates Dejan Kulusevski and Rodrigo Bentancur from Juventus.
However, a report from Sports has put some fuel on the fire that a summer store can be on.
That’s what the report says Svanberg will leave Bologna for a top club at the end of the season. But Tottenham will face stiff competition from Manchester United for the player’s services.
Italian sides Juventus, Inter Milan, Roma and AC Milan are also keen that Svanberg emerged as one of Swedish football’s rising stars in recent seasons.
The midfielder made his debut for Bologna during the 2018-19 campaign. He has since made 102 competitive appearances for the club and scored nine goals.
He is known for his versatility and non-stop energy engine in the middle of the park. These are two key qualities that Antonio Conte loves in midfielders.
The report adds that Svanberg is seen as a replacement for Harry Winks, who looks confident to leave this summer.
Both Crystal Palace and Southampton are reported to have expressed interest in the Englishman.
United also crave for Swedish star
But if Conte is to work with Svanberg with Kulusevski next season, Spurs must ignore United’s challenge.
The red devils are said to want the Swede to put pressure on Fred’s place at Old Trafford.
There is also a big possibility that Paul Pogba is on his way this summer. That would leave a big opening for a new arrival, although it will not be easy to fill Pogba’s boots.
The Frenchman has shown genius flashes after returning from Juventus. But his lack of consistency has made United seem happy to let him end his current contract.
The report concludes that Svanberg could choose to stay in Italy instead. After all, he has made a big name for himself in Serie A and may not want to bet on trying another league at a relatively young age.
