Pestalozzistraße: Village street with metropolitan flair | Munich evening newspaper
Isarvorstadt – Very exciting, this Pestalozzistrasse. On the one hand, it looks rural, is quietly situated on a stream where mallards swim, on whose parallel footpaths there are benches and on whose meadow strips the first flowers are already blooming.
But it is also a lively street, with shops and restaurants with free bars, with a view of city life. Typical Munich. I’ll take a closer look.
I became aware of them over the past year. So I took a walk along the Isartalstrasse and ended it at the Fugger tunnel, which runs under the Kapuzinerstrasse and at the other end you meet the Pestalozzistrasse.
graffiti and sleeping quarters
The tunnel, full of brightly colored, cheerful graffiti, is also a homeless person’s sleeping quarters, which lies deserted during the day. I am now walking into town on Pestalozzistrasse.
The old brick wall of the Old South Cemetery extends to the link. The brick wall is partly covered with ivy. Ferns cling to the masonry where weather has cracked the mortar between the stones. A latticed opening gives a glimpse of the tombstones.
To the right: Bume, the Fuweg and the Westerhlbach. Ducks swim on the water, the first primroses glow yellow in between. Carrion crows are in flirting mode and drive away the rivals, the water glitters in the sun. On the other side of the stream: the back of the buildings, gardens, backyards, wooden fences. A building with a driveway into the creek.
Residential houses and first shops
At some point, the Westerhlbach disappears behind a lock and unfortunately only continues to flow underground. From then on the street becomes busier, residential buildings appear, the first shops.
On the right I then look at the small lumberyard, which is equipped with the covered toilet shack on which Freddie Mercury was immortalized. A rather strange location for one of the greatest musicians in the world. There is also a music store, pubs and restaurants on both sides.
It ends at Blumenstraße, the quiet village street by the stream, with a lively metropolitan character. Full of contradictions, but nice to walk on, regardless of whether you enjoy nature on a bench in the sun or treat yourself to a woman in a pub.
On that note, have a nice week
