Basel-Stadt: 12 percent more crimes than in the previous year
For years, the canton of Basel-Stadt has held the top spot in police crime statistics. In a city comparison, too, Basel is at the top for many crimes. The canton of Geneva follows behind Basel. Monday’s Swiss crime statistics show that the canton of Basel-Stadt is once again at the top. In a city comparison, too, Basel is at the top for many crimes.
For the year 2021, 22,585 criminal offenses were registered in the canton of Basel-Stadt. That is 12 percent more than in the previous year. With a frequency of 114.8 crimes per 1,000 inhabitants, Basel-Stadt clearly leads the list of cantons. The city canton is followed by the canton of Geneva, which is far behind in terms of numbers with 75.5 crimes per 1000 inhabitants.
High values for the city canton are not surprising
Now the high values are not particularly surprising for a city canton. But even when compared to other cities, Basel tops the list when it comes to many crimes. For example, in the case of thefts with 48.9 acts per 1000 inhabitants – ahead of Biel with the frequency of 46.1 acts.
When it comes to violent crime, a more mixed picture emerges when comparing the cities. The city of Basel is in the lead for all violent crimes with 12.3 crimes per 1,000 inhabitants – also ahead of Lausanne with a frequency of 11.5 crimes.
The fact that the city of Basel, as well as the entire canton, is one of the most criminal in Switzerland is not new. The border makes Basel a hotspot, as a police spokesman told Blick last September.
The SVP calls for a package of measures
When it comes to bodily harm, however, Basel is on par with Bellinzona, Biel and Zurich with 1.8 crimes per 1000 inhabitants, behind Lugano, Geneva and Vernier, with frequency figures between 2.3 and 2.6.
The SVP Basel-Stadt reacts to these results with concern and incomprehension. That is why she wrote in a media release today that she is demanding a package of measures from the government by the summer of 2022. “It must include all security policy aspects – for example, the use of video surveillance at hotspots and an increase in the police force as well as the prioritization of certain police tasks.” The SVP also demands “that the government work with the federal government to strengthen the border guard corps, since cross-border crime is one of the reasons for the desolate security situation”.
