Accusation of sexism in water games poster – salzburg.ORF.at
timeline
On April 1st, the Salzburg trick fountains in Hellbrunn open their doors again and advertise with posters. However, one motive arouses less desire in some Salzburgers to visit the sight, but accusations of sexism. Experts confirm this.
The poster shows a painted jet of water, which is a good two meters high aimed directly between the legs of a dancer, criticize Salzburg residents. They find it inappropriate, tasteless and sexist. Criticism shared by professionals.
Barbara Sieberth from the Watchgroup against sexist advertising: “We don’t want to judge taste, because that’s always in the eyes of the beholder. But what we can analyze IS that the view is directed precisely to the area – i.e. between the legs. With this jet of water he lands between his open legs. There is no problem with the remaining posters. In this respect, we can understand this criticism and also share it.”
Complaints and Promotional Advice
There can also be eroticism in advertising if it fits, Sieberth continues: “It is always a question of whether eroticism takes place at eye level and whether it also suits the advertised product. If I see a poster and find it sexist, derogatory or the woman reduced to sexuality, then you can report something like this to the equality bodies or the advertising council.”
Criticized advertising was engineered by women
The poster is part of a series, all subjects were developed exclusively by women, says Ingrid Sonvilla, head of the water games, shocked by the accusation of sexism: “If it appears so big on the advertising pillar, then I can understand it. But it was never intentional and we didn’t realize it. This is new for me today and I’m surprised, but I can understand it. The posters should reflect Hellbrunn’s love of life.”
Water games are considering replacing the poster motif
According to expert Barbara Sieberth, conveying excessive joie de vivre would have been easy to convey with little effort – even without the fountain in the female crotch: “You can have this specific poster – the other two subjects don’t have this situation, once out of traffic pull, change and repost. These are not huge costs. If that’s important to you as an organizer, then you can do it.” The Hellbrunn Fountains are probably considering the current poster motifs.
