Saimaa canal open on Monday 28.3
Saimaa Channel representatives have decided that the traffic season on the Channel will begin on March 28, 2022 at 6 p.m.
The representatives of the canal agree annually on the length of the sailing season in the Saimaa canal. The Saimaa canal is open to ship traffic 24 hours a day during the season.
Representatives agreed on the length of the protocol’s sailing period and the tentative opening date for the traffic season. A more specific opening date will be determined by ice and weather conditions and will be agreed through correspondence between the channel’s representatives.
The representative of the Finnish Saimaa Canal is Minna KivimäkiChief of Staff of the Ministry of Transport and Communications.
“Finland complies with the EU’s sanctions policy, but the sanctions do not apply to traffic on the Saimaa canal, so it can be opened normally,” Kivimäki says.
The Saimaa canal is 43 kilometers long. Almost half of the canal passes through an area leased from Russia.
The Finnish and Russian channel delegations have agreed to open the Saimaa Canal on March 28, 2022. However, the channel’s icebreaking services will not be launched at that time.
