Right now: Slovakia and the world will go out for an hour. Join the campaign to protect the environment
On Saturday, March 26, 2022, at 8:30 PM local time, the world will commemorate Earth Hour again. Every year, the event brings together cities, companies and individuals in more than 190 countries around the world. Together, they are drawing attention to the environmental threats that our planet remains.
“Our aim is to protect nature, but this is only possible in peace. In these challenging times, we want to seek solidarity with humans as a planet for Earth Hour. By symbolically turning off monuments, billboards or lights in people for one hour, we invite people from all over the world to come together and call for a home, a just and sustainable future for all, ” says Miroslava Plassmann, director of WWF Slovakia.
The event has spread to more than 190 countries
Earth Hour was initiated by WWF in 2007 in Australia and highlighted the consequences of environmental change. Gradually, the event spread to more than 190 countries.
Since 2011, it has also taken place in Slovakia, on the initiative of the Slovak Astronomical Society at the Slovak Academy of Sciences and the Slovak Astronomers’ Union. Initially, Earth Hour in our country drew attention to light pollution, which limits astronomers in their observations.
WWF Slovakia has joined the events since 2016, and the campaign focused on the effects of the climate crisis, nature damage, the extinction of plant and animal species, and invites people and companies to change their behavior and want to live within the limits of the planets. The event has a tradition in Slovakia. Every year, castles, chateaux, towns and villages, as well as advertisements from private companies, symbolically switch off the lights.
