Portugal sets the clocks ahead on Sunday morning: daylight saving time begins, which in the US will become permanent
Daylight saving time goes into effect at dawn this Sunday and Portugal will have to advance one hour so that the day gets dark later. On the mainland and Madeira, as every year, this gesture must be made at 1 am by changing the clock to 2 am. In the Azores, you jump from midnight to 1am.
This change, which takes place twice in October, was the subject of reflection in 2018, when the European Commission, proposed by the EU Parliament, presented a proposal to abolish it. However, the Member States do not understand each other, even though a survey at the European level has concluded that 4.6 million people agree on a single timetable throughout the year.
In Portugal, an Astronomical Observatory in Lisbon and reported the maintenance of the António Costa measure did not contradict it. The reason given at the time was that the permanent adoption of both summer and winter time would not bring any real benefits here.
USA adopts daylight saving time
However, headwinds are blowing across the Atlantic, where the US Senate has just passed legislation to end the bi-annual North Time. According to “The New York Times”, summer time will be permanent from 2023, which has already been criticized by several scientists who are dedicated to research on sleep, and for whom the existence of night light can be harmful to rest.
As a new mode of posting in practice, the scheduled time will end up in the country where it was first conceived, in an article by Benjamin Franklin written for the “Journal de Paris”.
