Mixed winter record for Salzburg Airport
economy
The state of Salzburg expects further turbulence for Salzburg Airport. The winter season in charter traffic went well. The Ukraine war now brings the next difficulties. Above all, a quick return of Russian guests is probably out of the question.
After the total failure in winter 2020/21, the past season was almost normal at the airport. The balance sheet is positive – at least under the conditions of the CoV crisis – says Deputy Prime Minister Christian Stöckl (ÖVP), who is responsible for the airport and is its head of the supervisory board. The outlook is less rosy.
“Americans” still don’t want to come
According to Stöckl, guests from overseas could stay away again this summer: “Guests from the USA are already staying away. According to the motto: We don’t fly to Europe, there’s war there.”

Russian market completely collapsed
The previously well-anticipated market with Russian holidaymakers has collapsed completely because of the Ukraine war – and is unlikely to come back anytime soon: “In recent years, only a few Russian guests have come compared to the years before. There WILL NOT be a quick return either because of the sanctions. And I think this is the right way.”
understanding of sanctions
The biggest disadvantage this year remains the unexpected predictability of the flight plans, adds Stöckl. Neither on the subject of CoV nor in the Ukraine conflict are serious assessments and plans possible for the coming months.
