China’s UN official stresses the importance of development for human rights
China’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations in Geneva, Chen Xu, raised the importance of development for human rights in a speech on behalf of over 50 countries at the 49th session of the UN Human Rights Council on Friday.
Chen underlined that the economic and social development and people’s lives in all countries, especially in developing countries, have been severely affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. The global development process is currently facing major challenges. Development plays a major role in the enjoyment of human rights. The international community should strive to swiftly implement the 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda to achieve strong, green and healthy global development.
Chen Xu declines in his speech on China’s positions on democracy and human rights. Democracy and human rights are the joint action of mankind. Different countries would have made different choices for democracy based on their respective histories, cultures and realities. According to China’s representative at the United Nations in Geneva, whether a country is democratic or not can be judged mainly on the basis of whether the people really are masters of the country and whether the problems of the people are successfully solved.
