Yo Yo Ma plays in Lisbon with students from the Conservatory and National Institute of Music of Afghanistan – Observer
Cellist Yo Ma is coming to Lisbon next week to play with the National Institute of Music of Afghanistan (ANIM), whose headquarters have moved to Portugal, announced the Artistic School of Music of the National Conservatory this Friday.
The American musician born in France and of Chinese origin is considered one of the best cellists today, and is also a UN Peace Ambassador.
“The National Conservatory’s Artistic School of Music (EAMCM) will have the honor to welcome the cellist Yo-Yo Ma”, advances the conservatory, explaining that the musician will participate in various activities with the EAMCN community and ANIM.
Under the theme “the importance of music for the union of peoples”, Yo Yo Ma will be available at Marquês de Pombal Secondary School, in Lisbon, on the 29th of March.
The program includes a concert with an Ensemble of Traditional Afghan Music, with students from the conservatory and Yo-Yo Ma.
During the morning, there is also a “conversation between Yo-Yo Ma and the educational community about the role of music in uniting peoples and the importance of cultural diversity“, adds EAMCM, in a note sent to Lusa.
In the past, the then Defense Minister, João Gomes Cravinho, announced that Portugal became the headquarters of the Afghanistan School of Music (ANIM) under that country’s emergency shelter, after the Taliban took power.

João Gomes Cravinho said at the time that ANIM treats music as a “bridge between cultures”, teaching foreigners its traditional essence.
