The biggest gathering of athletes, 110 years after Portugal debuted at the Olympic Games
It’s a kind of Olympic concentration at the highest level. The Olympic Cascais event is organized by these Olympic Games events representing the Association of Olympic Athletes of Portugal (AAOP) and the Municipality of Cascais, with the High Sponsorship of the President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa.
The highlight is the night ceremony at Nova SBE (Carcavelos) where the athletes who participated in the 1952 and 1972 Olympics will be honored, at a time when the 110th anniversary of Portugal’s first participation (Stockholm 1912)the 70th anniversary of the first female female (Helsinki 1952) and the 50th anniversary of the massacre of teenagers in Munich 1972.
Joaquim (gymnastics, Rome 1952), José Quina (Helsin silver medal, with his brother Mário in Rome 1960) and Gentil Martintiro, Rome 1960) are some of those honored. Athletes present at Tokyo 1964 and Mexico 1968 will also be distinguished.
Strengthening ties between the 808 Portuguese Olympic athletes and bringing them into the discussion of sport in the country is one of the objectives, as is the post-career discussion. Luís Alves Monteiro, pass AAOP with the “situations that want to intervene definitively and notoriety”.
The event also includes the annual Executive Committee of the World Olympians Association, an organization that oversees all national Olympic Associations.
