Rangers play on the bench for Sweden as the World Cup dream approaches
Rangers defender Filip Helander sat on the bench for Sweden when they defeated the Czech Republic 1-0 after extra time in a tense World Cup semi-final in Sweden.
Helander came off the bench during the extra 30 minutes and came in for Alexander Isak, who put up Robin Quaison’s winner with only ten minutes left in the equalizer.
The defender has recently returned from a long period from the Ibrox team due to injury and it was refreshing to see him called by the Swedes for the decisive match.
Filip Helander on the bench for Sweden when they defeat The Czech Republic will play in the final of the World Cup final against Poland
Helander did his thing Swedish premiere in March 2017 and have continued to play 19 times for the national team while being part of the squad for the 2018 World Cup and the delayed European Championship 2020 tournament.
The 28-year-old did not play in the World Cup and played only 19 minutes in the last sixteen matches against Ukraine at the European Championships 2020, so he will be desperate to make up for it if Sweden qualifies for the World Cup.
After signing for Rangers in the summer of 2019, he has gone from strength to strength and played a major role when the Ibrox team won the league title at a gallop last season.
His injury at the start of this campaign prevented the team when we conceded more goals and looked shaky defensively.
If he stays in shape for the rest of the season, he may well play a big role in the heart of the defense along with Connor Goldson as we chase glory on three fronts.
At the same time, a Rangers icon has insisted that defeat against Celtic in next week’s Old Firm match is unthinkable.
