Mitsotakis: We achieved an explicit reference to the price of natural gas – Video
The Union Summit ended with several difficult discussions on the issue of energy.
In his initial statement, Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis said that “yesterday we had a substantive discussion with Joe Biden, we reaffirmed our insistence on walking together on the path of sanctions. We express our dissatisfaction with the fact that some countries, and NATO members, are not keeping pace with sanctions, reducing their effectiveness.
I invited the Ukrainian President Zelensky to speak in parliament in a Greek telephone conversation with him. We have also decided together with other countries and especially France to organize a humanitarian operation in Mariupol, where Russia unfortunately puts without distinction between soldiers and civilians. “Even Russia did not realize that this practice is isolating it.”
Mr. Mitsotakis also said that “in energy we had a difficult discussion. We did not manage to find a common ground before the Summit. We managed to have a reference to the gas price ceiling. Ask the President of the Commission to talk to all the key players, in order to propose solutions, including the ceiling.
“The question of how the price of gas affects the price of electricity also remains open. The committee has agreed to submit proposals in May.”
He added: “We are very pleased to hear the Commission’s proposals that the EU can be supplied with gas centrally by the major fuel producing countries. Despite the difficulties and minor tensions in the debate, we have reached common conclusions, which are positive for the EU to intervene and use its power to break the game of speculators and not ultimately fund Russia’s war. “No European country is able to bear the burden of exorbitant prices alone.”
Finally, the Prime Minister said that “one issue that will concern us is the global food crisis, I have convened such a meeting with the leadership of the Ministry of Rural Development for next Monday. It does not concern our country but we must be prepared for such a crisis. “
