PS: Arengo anniversary – 25 March 1906
One hundred and sixteen years have passed since that fateful date in which the San Marino people conquered democracy without bloodshed with a decisive struggle against the dominant oligarchy of the time which until then had denied it. From that moment on, the people of San Marino began again to elect their representatives in the Great and General Council. Pietro Franciosi and Gino Giacomini had built and led the path of this conquest which took place on the wave of a renewing movement to be built. The birth of the Socialist Party in 1892 had stirred the conscience but one realized the fragility of the conquest achieved and the important commitment that was needed to promote a political class capable of defending it. The twenty-year fascist period tried to cancel this conquest but never succeeded in destroying it and so the people of San Marino continued to elect representatives in the Great and General Council. In the 2000s the Council continued to have this fundamental task of democratic representation of the people today which must be preserved and defended. But the San Marino citizens, especially the new generations, must realize that the role of the Council must be strengthened in its tasks, not only of representation but of a lively and vigilant institution. Its role as guarantor of the system of equilibrium between the main institutions must never fail, as happened some time ago, and guarantee that the executive power abides by its role of honest and impartial executor on the indications that the Great Council and General must dare in the name of the people. The Socialist Party celebrates this anniversary of Arengo 1906 with these sentiments and with a renewed presence in the country to consolidate and strengthen the central role of the Great and General Council.
