Exhibitions: at Maxxi the visionary Venice of Ozpetek – Lazio
(ANSA) – ROME, MARCH 23 – A magical box that contains the visionary Venice of Ferzan Ozpetek. Sinuous images, with soft colors, filtered as in a dream by the liquid lens of the water, of the sea that surrounds it. It’s Venetika, the director’s homage to the lagoon city: a video installation starring a wonderful Kasia Smutniak, as eternal and mysterious as the city she embodies.
The project, curated by Giovanna Zabotti, produced by Faros Film and Fondaco, Bulgari main partner, was conceived in 2019 for the 58th Venice Biennale of Art and now arrives in Rome at MAXXI, the National Museum of XXI Century Arts , from 29 March to 30 April 2022.
“Venice is a woman immersed in water (Kasia Smutniak). – says Ozpetek – The liquid and opaque moving surface of the sea seems to be a screen for her and the images, filtered by water, of the Materials in where the City materialized when the liquid became solid and became marble, wood, rope and metal. All the images of the city pass over her, beautiful and eternal, lying under the water because she is possessed by everything and however she possesses everything at the same time. Because this woman is neither the Siren who lives in the water, nor Ophelia who dies in the water. It is the City itself, which regenerates itself continuously by feeding on its own images, which reflects on her just when she is a general herself, protected by a water that is almost amniotic fluid “. Visitors will find in piazza Alighiero Boetti a singular treasure chest, a red cube measuring 7 by 7 meters with walls which on the one hand recall the tradition of the “Venetian mirrors”, on the other they reflect the surrounding environment by immersing themselves in it.
The explosion of color of the exterior is counterpointed by the dark and rarefied atmosphere of the interior, where the public follows a path that, as in a game of Chinese boxes, winds around a central “room” dedicated to priojection of the short film, the real heart of the installation. On the ground, the wooden slats refer to the typical bridges of Venice, on the walls images in large format taken from the film accompany the visitor.
The tour ends with the Short, a 5-minute film enclosed like a treasure in the innermost area. The visitor, suspended above a pier, is enveloped by the projection on 3 walls, which is reflected on the ground on a pool of water, creating an engaging and immersive one. Everything is perceived by the scent of the lagoon, while the music and voice of Sezen Aksu spread. (HANDLE).
