Cologne (dpa) – The trial against the Reemtsma kidnapper Thomas Drach will be natural before the Cologne Regional Court today. Among other things, a witness hearing is planned. The hearing had been postponed several times due to corona diseases among those involved in the process.
Drach are accused of robbery of money transporters in the process. In two acts he is said to have shot and seriously injured security guards. The 61-year-old is charged with attempted murder and particularly serious robbery. A co-defendant in the process is said to have acted as an accomplice. Both men have been silent so far. Defense attorneys say they expect an acquittal.
In 1996, Drach kidnapped the heir to the Hamburg Reemtsma tobacco dynasty, Jan Philipp Reemtsma, and later released him for ransom. He was sentenced to fourteen and a half years in prison for the crime. In 2021 he was arrested on suspicion of the raids in the Netherlands.
