Two women killed by force in Malmö school
Two women died after a violent attack on a school in southern Malmö on Monday.
Around 17.00 (16.00 GMT) on Monday, a man entered the school with an ax and a knife, according to local media. About 50 students were on site at Malmö Latin School then.
The two women, both in their 50s and employees at the school, are believed to have been injured in the attack. They suffered from their injuries late Monday night.
Malmö Police Chief Petra Stenkula said: “It is with great sadness that we can state that two people lost their lives in this terrible event and our thoughts go to their relatives and friends.”
Police have arrested an 18-year-old suspect in connection with the incident. Local media reported that he himself called the rescue service to report that he had killed two people.
But the authorities are still trying to find out what caused the attack and how it developed.
Police have said they would take statements from everyone present at the school at the time to put together the attack.
– Now a lot of work awaits to be able to understand what happened and the underlying motive for this terrible event, says Malmö northern police chief Åsa Nilsson.
A religious seminar and a lecture on criminology were going on at that time, the students said, adding that that was why they were in school even after 5 p.m.
They added that they were kept in classrooms for several hours while the police conducted searches after the attack.
This is what the school principal Fredrik Hemmensjö tells the local newspaper Aftonbladet: “This is absolutely awful. I just know that there is deadly violence in the school. “
He added that crisis management groups from both the school and the local administration had been brought in to deal with the situation.
