Sweden takes its fifth victory on Tuesday morning
Tuesday morning’s ninth round-robin session in BKT Tires & OK Tire World Women’s Curling Championship contained only two matches – Sweden met Italy while Denmark met Turkey.
Sweden against Italy
In the match between Sweden and Italy, the Swedes started with the last stone, and missed the first end.
Italy then stole a single at the other end. Sweden came on the scoreboard in the third, with two points that could have been three. However, the Swedish jumper Anna Hasselborg could not keep her goal scorer in goal position when she hit a hit.
In the sixth final, Sweden led 3-1 and had five stones in scoring position when Italy’s jumper Stefania Constantini successfully pulled everyone in, and scored one point.
With this, Italy reduced Sweden’s lead to 3-2.
After a brilliant seventh finish, Swedish Hasselborg successfully completed an open hit-and-stay in the eighth end, to score two points and move their lead to 5-2.
Sweden then had a steal of one in the ninth to end the match, 6-2.
This result moves Sweden to a clear third place in the ranking behind the joint leaders Korea and Switzerland, who put out this session.
After the match, Hasselborg was full of praise for their young opponents, “We have had many good matches against Italy, they are a really good, promising team – they are fantastic pitchers. We expected them to take us to the end and they would have done so, but they played on the ninth. “
Denmark v Turkey
Denmark took the lead early in the match against Turkey and scored two points in the first end.
In the second, Turkey’s defender Dilsat Yildiz played a delicate double tap to open his team’s points with one point.
In the third end, Denmark’s jumper Madeleine Dupont played a double take-out that shared two Turkish stones that were close to the button, to score three points and advance to a 5-1 lead.
Denmark had a single steal in the fourth end and looked to cross with a 6-1 lead. But in the fifth end, good lay-up play by her team gave Yildiz the opportunity to score four goals with a final draw that changed the direction of play. This Turkish score of four reduced Denmark’s lead to 6-5, when they went into the break.
Turkey then had a single steal in the sixth end to level the score at 6-6.
In the seventh end, Danish Madeleine Dupont played a tap-up to make two – it looked like it could have been three points, but a referee’s measurements later confirmed only two, when Denmark regained the lead at 8-6.
In the tenth end, Dupont missed an elimination attempt, and this allowed Yildiz to score two points, level the game at 10-10 and force an extra finish.
Denmark had the last stone in the extra end and continued with a point that gave them an 11-10 win.
They now have three wins in total and sit in the middle of the table, while Turkey are still looking for their first win.
Afterwards, a relieved Madeleine Dupont said: “It was close. We have only played against this team once before and it was down to the last stone as well. It’s just very close all the time. You have to show up and be ready to play against this team. It’s small things that happen. “
More generally, she added, “It’s pretty good, and we’ll just keep going, keep going.”
Korea would play against Scotland in this session, but difficulties with COVID-19 have forced the Scots to withdraw, giving Korea the automatic win. This will be the case for all of Scotland’s remaining round-robin opponents.
Session nine results: Sweden 6-2 Italy; Korea WL Scotland; Denmark 11-10 Turkey
