Portugal needs to get restaurants and hotels to recycle glass
To feed the glass industry, 400 thousand tons of used material are imported annually.
To meet the recycling targets 70% of glass packaging in 2025 and 75% in 2030, the country needs recycling reasons such as packaging from the HORECA channel (restaurants, hotels, cafes). To achieve this goal, the Association of Glass and Packaging Industries and Sociedade Ponto Verde presented this Tuesday, in Guimarães, a project that intends to facilitate the function of placing large glass packaging lenses in the video,
The system is made up of 120 liter contents that, when coupled with a device in its own video, allow for basic content effortlessly. This device is intended to facilitate the recycling task of those who are the producers of the material type. On average, this type of company annually produces 2045 kilos of glass packaging, against the 63 kilos of domestic dwellings. That’s why Sandra Santos, president of AIVE, says that “it is in this channel that the most efficient bet for the recovery of used glass resides.”
The problem is that the existing videos are not designed for these operators. With the inlets located at a high height, it is impossible to unload a load quickly and comfortably. In a pilot, with tipping containers, carried out in 2014, in Setúbal and Almada, it was possible to increase the collection by 300%, points out Susana Ramalho, responsible for collection operators, at Sociedade Ponto Verde.
We aimed to test the technology, with the first experiences, pilot project, evaluation, today, presentation of the adhesion of the companies, this extends for 18 months. The “#horecafazpartedasolução: More Glass, More Recycling”, has already started with Lipor, in Matosinhos, Gondomar and Espinho, with Resinorte, in Guimarães and Vizela and in Cascais, through Cascais Ambiente. In May, Algar will extend the project to some municipalities in the Algarve.
No higher capacity used. At the same time, the agents also provide training for the ceramic glass recycling sectors, despite the population being resistant, there are good practices that need to be implemented, “how to avoid programming for Portuguese glass with materials” (plates, cups.. .), originally from Susana Ramalho.
Portugal is late
Portugal is a little late, recognizes Sandra Santos. The country currently has 56% of glass packaging and in the best year, 2011, it reached 60%. However, glass consumption increased, but used glass collection did not like it. Europe as a whole is already reinstalling 76% of glass packaging and “Close Loop”, a European industry glass target platform, aims for 90% collection by 2030. the more recyclable our ovens, we recycle more, if we claim the president of the Association of Associations of the glassmakers we use.
of being only three national companies, the sector, despite being exceptional, annually produces 1.5 million tons, corresponding to six million packages. This industry exports between 70 and 80% of its production, 60% in empty packages and 20% in full packages.
To feed its kilns, the glass sector imports 400 thousand used tons (shell) annually. One ton of hull is equivalent to 1.2 tons of raw material, because glass is 100% recyclable. In addition to the savings in the case savings primarily allow the use to save (3%) and reduce CO2 savings.
It is estimated that in Portugal 200 thousand tons of used glass packaging are available to put in the ovens every day, so Beatriz, secretary general of A glass companies, because “searching like this, what we go to the foreign market is more than everything that the national market produces.”
