Portugal in NATO: defending exit and PCP requires investigation?
This week there is a NATO summit with the President of the United States, Joe Biden, because of the war in Ukraine. But here, for the parliamentary left, the organization of the North Atlantic Treaty remains a target. Is the Left Bloc in favor of leaving NATO and the PCP really wants to look for it?
We went to review the electoral programs of the two parties.
In the Bloc’s program, relating to the 2022-2026 legislature, it can be read that, for the Left Bloc, “a foreign policy based on human rights and solidarity also implies the rejection of participation in NATO and its military operations“.
As for the PCP, in the electoral program presented in the 2022 legislation there is a reference to NATO. The communists defend “a sovereign development strategy and a foreign policy not subordinated to the agenda of the European Union and NATO and assent to peace and cooperation”.
In the 2019 program, the communists are even clearer and the document even defends “investigating NATO”.
Having said that, it is true that the Left Bloc is in favor of Portugal’s departure from NATO and the PCP wants to seek the North Atlantic Treaty Organization.
