Mr President Türk joins the UN High Level Advisory Committee
NEW YORK, USA – UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres has appointed former Slovenian President and head of the Madrid Club Danilo Türk to the High Advisory Committee on Effective Multilateralism, along with 11 other prominent former and current leaders and experts. Ahead of last year’s general discussion of world leaders in September 2021, Guterres published a report entitled Our Common Agenda, which calls for stronger governance of key issues of global importance.
The increase in the number of coronavirus cases from week to week continues
LJUBLJANA – 1474 coronavirus infections were recorded in Slovenia on Saturday, which is 366 more than a week ago. The National Institute of Public Health estimates that there are currently 32,946 active infections in the country, which is 7,290 more than a week ago. The number of hospitalizations has further decreased, with 181 patients being treated for Covid-19 this morning, 48 of them in intensive care. Six patients with covid died, according to the Ministry of Health.
Timi Zajc winner of the World Cup in ski flying in Obersdorf
OBERSTDORF, Germany – Timi Zajc won the World Cup race in ski flying in Obersdorf, Germany, jumping 232 meters. This is the second victory of his career after Oberstdorf in 2019. The second was the Pole Pjotr Žyla and the third was the Austrian Stefan Kraft. Slovenian Žiga Jelar took fourth place. This is the 71st Slovenian individual victory in ski jumping and the 19th in ski flying. Together with team victories, Slovenia is proud of 82 victories.
Tina Šutej won bronze at the World Athletics Championships in Belgrade
BELGRADE, Serbia – Slovenian Tina Šutej won bronze in the 4.75-meter pole vault at the World Athletics Championships on Saturday. The current champion, the American Sandi Morris, defended the title with 4.80 meters, and the silver was won by Katie Nageotte, also an American (4.75 meters). 33-year-old Šutej, who won silver at last year’s World Athletics Indoor Championships in Toruń, Poland, earned Slovenia the sixth medal from the World Athletics Indoor Championships.
The Minister spoke about the consular needs of Slovenes in Germany
BERLIN, Germany – Minister for Slovenes Abroad Helena Jaklitsch spoke with representatives of the Slovenian Embassy in Berlin on Saturday about the consular needs of 30,000-40,000 Slovenes living in Germany. Jaklitsch discussed the challenges with Polona Mal Bitec, who is responsible for consular activities at the embassy. Due to the great interest in consular services, the possibility of introducing consular days in the town of Hilden in North Rhine-Westphalia was discussed in order to facilitate the issuance of documents.
