San Marino pays homage to Banksy: his most famous works on display
Banksy’s works housed in the exhibition halls of the Sums in San Marino, the headquarters of the mutual aid society of Monte Titano, in an exhibition that pays homage to the English wrtier, one of the best known and most appreciated in the world. The works in question are thirty serigraphs by Banksy himself between 2002 and 2009 in a series that includes forty-six that reproduce some of his most famous images. It is not a small repertoire, because some were used in his outdoor interventions and later became “popular frescoes”. In San Marino thirty “originals” have been selected for the “Banksy on the Titan” exhibition scheduled at the somme headquarters until June 19th. Among these are the iconic Girl with Balloon, dated 2004, which in 2017 turned out to be – at least according to a survey carried out by Samsung – the most loved by the British. And there is also the equally famous Love is In the Air, perhaps the symbol – even in the light of the times – of a real poetic. It is the image shot over and over again of the young man throwing a bouquet of flowers, on a red background. She first appeared in Jerusalem on the wall to separate Israelis and Palestinians.
On display
But not only these are the serigraphs that can be admired in the halls of the sums. The two curators Stefano Antonelli and Gianluca Marziani tell us about it. “From the series known as Placard Rats (Mice with Cartel) that has appeared countless times, especially in London, in the form of non-commissioned street art, Get Out While You Can also comes on show, screen printing on paper from 2004, in which Banksy captures a parallelism between rodents and the condition of the street artist and borrowed the image of mice from the French street artist Blek Le Rat, who disseminated them throughout Paris in the 1980s ”. Among the works on display there is also one of the very first stencils made in the public space by the artist. “This is the Grin Reaper (the” grim reaper “, as death is called in some Western mythologies), who first appeared in the Old Street district in London, where Banksy has made several interventions, who sits curved on the dial of the he clock of the Tower of London with its symbolic scythe in hand and its skeletal feet, characterized by a “smile”, the only dissonant and unpredictable element, typical of the Banksian register “.
“A new statute of the work of art”
The “Banksy on Monte Titano” exhibition will be open until June 19. And it is produced and organized by the MetaMorfosi Association in collaboration with the Secretariat of State for Culture of the Republic of San Marino. “Banksy questions concepts such as uniqueness, originality, authorship and above all the truth of the work” explain the two curators, Stefano Antonelli and Gianluca Marziani, “outlining a new vision on the relationship between work and market, , in fact, a new statute of the work of art, a new truth of art itself, or the original non-marketable work ».
