Bundesliga : A sovereign victory for Salzburg at WAC
Noah Okafor (15′), Junior Adamu (27′) and Rasmus Kristensen (36′) made things clear even before the break in front of 3,626 spectators. The fourth goal went to Maurits Kjaergaard (68′). The Carinthians, who once again didn’t win after six league home wins in a row, only managed to make up for the result with Eliel Peretz (87th). Salzburg went off the field as winners for the fifth time in a competitive game in the Lavanttal Arena.
The fact that top striker Karim Adeyemi was out with a hamstring problem, as was Brenden Aaronson, who complained of knee pain during the warm-up, and captain Andreas Ulmer was rested from the start didn’t matter.
Salzburg prevails at the WAC
After the arduous rise in the ÖFB Cup final, Salzburg has no problems with the WAC in the league. The leader of the table prevailed in a sovereign manner with 4:1.
Salzburg will soon take command
As in the cup, the WAC got into the party well. This time, however, there was no lightning hit like during the week, when Matthäus Taferner had scored after just two minutes. Top chances didn’t materialize either, and after ten minutes the “bulls” took control of the game. In addition, the guests shine with high efficiency. After Peretz lost the ball and a long pass from Capaldo, Okafor moved to the middle, was attacked too little by Dominik Baumgartner and shot into the corner from just inside the penalty area.
Three minutes later goal number two was up in the air with a commotion in the penalty area, but Maximilian Wöber and Adamu couldn’t get the ball in the goal. The ÖFB team striker didn’t have to wait long for his goal and was successful from the edge of the penalty area with a powerful finish on the outside of his foot. Capaldo had conquered the ball for the first time and thus provided the assist again. Alexander Kofler was able to prevent the third goal conceded in a duel with Luka Sucic (32′), and Nicolas Seiwald also shot wide (35′).
Nevertheless, it goes into the cabins with a lead of three goals. After a pass from Okafor, Kristensen was able to calmly prepare the ball and the Dane shot over Kofler from 17 meters. Nothing to see from the WAC war offensive with the exception of a shot by Christopher Wernitznig (22nd).
WAC only succeeds in cosmetic results
That doesn’t change even after a three-way substitution at the break, including the bringing in of captain Michael Liendl. When things got dangerous, it was on the Salzburg side. With a bit of luck, Kjaergaard got the ball in the penalty area and defeated Kofler. From the 75th minute, Salzburg’s Zlatko Junuzovic, whose expiring contract will not be extended, gave up his comeback. The veteran indicated his danger with a shot (80th).
Defender Jerome Onguene also made his comeback in the finish. After all, the last highlight creates the hosts. Salzburg couldn’t get the ball away and Peretz hit the corner. The superior league leaders go into the international break with three league wins in a row, after which they continue at home against Rapid on April 3rd. The WAC, who have lost four of their last five championship games, received a storm that day.
Comments on the game:
Robin Dut (WAC coach): “It was already in the early stages of the game. Today we always had two or three too many contacts and too many until we lost the ball. Then Salzburg could switch in our direction and cause us difficulties. That’s how the goals came. Then it was difficult to come back. After the 0:3 it was only a matter of working through the game and making sure that it didn’t become too obvious. At least we were able to organize the second half in a more coordinated way.”
Matthias Jaissle (Salzburg coach): “First and foremost, you have to say that WAC did really well on Wednesday and presented us with a great challenge. Today we set out to do better than on Wednesday, also in terms of playing with the ball, positioning that should be more dynamic. We have implemented that superbly. In the transition situations after winning the ball, we acted very purposefully and efficiently. After taking the lead early on, we finished the game confidently, the win is okay in terms of height.”
