Sweden’s Biosphere Treettop Hotel has a façade of bird nests
Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG) envisions a tree house without its equal in the middle of a natural environment and in the company of birds. It is called the biosphere and is aimed at both bird watchers and nature lovers who want to wake up to the sight and sound of nature around them.
This unique residence will open in May 2022 and is suspended between trees. It is accessible via a suspension bridge that slopes from the ground to the top of the trees. This tree house has a distinctly unique spherical shape and around it flocks 350 bird nests.
The biosphere hotel, hung in Harad’s pines, tries to “reduce the downward spiral of the bird population in the Swedish forests and instead strengthen the biosphere and the natural habitat.” Treehotel and the Swedish ornithologist Ulf Öhman collaborated on the design with the goal of increasing and strengthening the local biosphere and the natural habitat in Swedish Lapland.
As such, nests provide a refuge for the resident bird and bat population in the area, allowing species to live together. The highlight is the roof terrace which is located near the treetops. Its idyllic location gives guests a 360-degree view of the forests. Speaking of guests, the Biosphere hotel can accommodate two people in a 34m2 hotel interior. The room uses dark interiors and organic materials inspired by the surrounding landscape. This encourages guests to enjoy the natural beauty outside.
In addition, the fixed conceptual make-up of the interior enables a range of experiences despite the small space. Guests at Biosphere can also experience the bird life in close proximity through a facade with three glasses. The good thing is that the birds do not drop where they nest, so there is a great chance that the glass remains clear in the aviary architecture.
