Fourth caregiver charged at Geneva home
The spokesman for the Geneva judicial authority, Olivier Francey, confirmed a corresponding report by the newspaper “Le Temps” to the Keystone-SDA news agency on Friday. According to the report, it was a supervisor who worked at night.
The young woman had to be taken to the hospital due to an overdose of medication. A criminal complaint was filed over the incident.
Already in February, three first employees of the home were questioned by the police in this connection. The prosecution alleges that they gave a resident medication that was not prescribed to her, thereby endangering her health or even her life. The defendants deny these allegations. According to “Le Temps”, all parties will be questioned by the public prosecutor’s office next Monday.
The drug incident is one of several abuses at the Mancy home that have come to light since the fall. The list of alleged misconduct is long. Children and young people are said to have been locked up, thrown on the ground, left in their excrement or dragged from one room to another by their clothes. Residents of the home were also repeatedly denied food.
The scandal has now reached a political dimension. Two days ago, the State Council announced a first package of measures to improve the situation. The supervision of the state homes is now located in the Office for Children and Youth. A cantonal platform for special needs education will also be launched.
The responsible State Councilor Anne Emery-Torracinta came under pressure from several sides because of the alleged abuse. The SP politician remained inactive in the case or did not react quickly enough, was criticized.
However, an external investigation report relieved the state councilor. He came to the conclusion that the hasty opening of the home in the summer of 2018 was the main reason for the abuses.
