Venice, Mayor Brugnaro: “Clean nuclear power in Porto Marghera”
Marghera as a pole not only for hydrogen, but also for nuclear power. In the plan of the new Foundation, a lot of emphasis is placed on Hydrogen Valleywith a pole of alternative energy, but the mayor Luigi Brugnaro looks further ahead – contemptuous of the controversies that this idea of his will surely raise – puts forward Porto Marghera to host the clean nuclear power that Eni is working on together with Massachusetts Institute of Technology, the famous MIT of Boston (and here you always come back). Eni has launched a patent for nuclear fusion, which is different from fission – explains Brugnaro – Eni’s program to start testing in the United States, but so American companies will carry it out and we risk losing it. So here is the idea: By 2026, pilot plants will be built to start the experimentation that will last years, perhaps even a decade – These small plants could also be built in Marghera. On the one hand, the mayor underlines the risk for the country of losing the nuclear train, and on the other on the need to make it self-sufficient from an energy point of view. We don’t have oil – he points out – we have the sun, but that’s not enough. It is necessary to be autonomous and a national plan is necessary. Also because we are full of energy-intensive companies: just think of Murano glass that in these days had to stop, but also the steel mills, the chemical factories. A lot of energy is also needed to produce hydrogen.
The piano of the Foundation
Not for nothing the central energy theme in the plan of the new Foundation and the minister Renato Brunetta thanked from the stage Marco Alver, CEO of Snam: The idea came to him. We started by asking ourselves what we could do to make Venice a positive example at an international level in the fight against climate change and the decline of urban centers, technological innovation, urbanization, sustainable tourism, youth policies – explains Alver – As a Venetian I am proud to have worked on an ambitious and transversal project. The foundation of the Foundation is a tangible sign of the ability of all the forces of civil society and politics to create a system – says the president of Confindustria Veneto Enrico Carraro – There are many initiatives and projects that are already being worked on, starting with the hydrogen hub in Marghera. Venice the sustainable city par excellence – he adds Vincenzo Marinese, president of Confindustria Venezia Rovigo – Just think of the first biorefinery in the world that Eni converted from a traditional refinery, to the Venice Lng project for the storage of liquid natural gas, to Alchemy which aims to become the leading producer in Europe of lithium salts for batteries.
