Ukraine hopes that the UN International Court of Justice will impose tough measures on Russia
The Ukrainian delegation in The Hague hopes that the UN court will impose tough measures on Russia.
Oksana Zolotareva, Ukraine’s co-agent, said this in an exclusive comment to Ukrinform’s own correspondent in The Hague at the hearings at the International Court of Justice.
“The court has complete discretion to determine the temporary measures that it is appropriate in such situations. We hope that the measures will be sufficient for Russia and will make a fair decision on the tough decision of the court of Ukraine, “she said.
Zolotareva reminded that tomorrow in The Hague she will announce the decision of the UN International Court of Justice on Ukraine’s requests for interim measures against Russia in the genocide charge, which was initiated by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on behalf of the President of Ukraine 26 this year.
“The case of Ukrainians covers the fact that Russia is a genocide, launched an unprecedented aggression against Ukraine, resulting in the death of civilians. Ukraine’s requests for interim measures were heard in The Hague last week, and the court will now rule. In fact, it will not be a hearing in the usual sense, but the court is simply reading the decision in the case, ”she explained.
According to her, the fact that Russia did not appear at the hearing did not affect the process. And the rumor is that Russia refused to participate in the hearings when Ukraine demanded the release of Ukrainian sailors, but agreed to comply with the court’s decision.
“A similar situation with Russia was in 2019, when we filed a lawsuit with the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea in the case of the seizure of Ukrainian ships and their crews. At that time, Russia also did not appear at the hearing, but also provided its written position. The court took her into account, ”Zolotareva explained.
She stressed that the oral hearings were scheduled as soon as possible – the court promptly responded to Ukraine’s appeal.
“We believe that Ukraine’s case is justified. We know that the court has jurisdiction over this case, and we hope for a positive decision for Ukraine and Ukrainian citizens, “she said.
She also noted that international law is a good mechanism, but quite free.
“The case under consideration is not difficult for the court, so we hope that it will prioritize work for the expedited consideration of this case,” Zolotareva said.
Also, answering the question in which court you can see Putin, she expressed hope for the International Criminal Court (ICC).
“We hope that Putin can be seen in the court in The Hague, namely in the International Criminal Court (ICC),” Zolotareva said.
As Ukrinform reported, on Wednesday, March 16, the UN court ruled in the case of Ukraine v. Russia on charges of genocide under the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide.
This is a genocide indictment hearing under the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of Crime.
On the third day of the invasion, Ukraine filed a lawsuit against Russia in the UN International Court of Justice demanding that the aggressor be held accountable for distorting the concept of genocide. Because Russia is actually trying to change the reality in order to correct its attack. So, in fact, the court has to decide whether genocide was committed in Ukraine. The fact is that Russia, as always, is trying to twist everything, saying that Ukraine allegedly went to genocide in Donetsk and Luhansk regions, so Russia was forced to use military force.
The war with Russian invaders has been going on in Ukraine since February 24.
