City of Salzburg – Having a say in the redesign of the “meeting zone in the city center”
Deputy Mayor Barbara Unterkofler invited to the first participatory event in the “Dialogue Meeting Zone Downtown” on March 14, 2022 in the Sponsors’ Lounge in the Festspielhaus. Almost 90 interested people – residents, business people and restaurateurs and interested Salzburg residents – accepted the invitation to have a say about the redesign and upgrading of the area between Karajan-Platz and the new roundabout on Franz-Josef-Kai.
After short specialist presentations on the architectural and historical development of this urban space and on basic possibilities from the perspective of urban and open space planning, moderated workshops were held in small groups, which revolved around the following central questions:
- What qualities should this urban space have?
- Which functions and uses should probably be possible here – and which not?
- What equipment does it require?
- And what else is important?
“By setting up a meeting zone between Neutor and Museumsplatz, we want to significantly increase the quality of stay on site and, above all, give pedestrians and cyclists more space. I am pleased to be able to redesign the next old town area together with the citizens. I would like to thank all participants for their great commitment and the extremely productive discussion. It is very important to me that YOU can bring your concerns directly to this area,” said Head of Planning Unterkofler.
All and ideas from the nine working groups were recorded in writing, are now being arranged and processed and serve as a basis for urban planning and the invited experts for the development of measures.
“We will present these suggestions at a second participatory event on May 9th and put them up for discussion again,” Unterkofler outlines the further course of events. The feedback should then be included in the further development of the concept by urban planning.
