Instaclustr adds business support to Karapace, open
REDWOOD CITY, CA and HELSINKI, March 14, 2022 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) – Instaclustrwhich helps organizations deliver applications on a large scale by operating and supporting their open source information infrastructure, announced today that it has increased business support Karapace, a fully open source alternative to Confluent’s Kafka Schema Registry and REST proxy. Karapace support is immediately available and part of Instaclustria comprehensive Apache Kafka® support solutions Guided by Kafka experts and available 24/7.
Launched in 2020, the Apache 2.0 licensed project, which has been widely deployed, is free available for download GitHubista. Karapacen loi Aiven shortly after Confluent announced its intention to move the Kafka Schema Registry and REST proxy from an Apache 2.0 license to a newer and more restrictive license, the Confluent Community License.
Instaclustr had supported Confluent’s Schema Registry and REST proxy, but identified critical features – such as support for Protobuf message formats – that were not available under a true open source license. Karapace was chosen as a more effective replacement, and Instaclustr joined Aiven to support the project with code and development resources. Instaclustr has already made a significant contribution to the Karapace project, including increased support for Protobuf schemes.
“Instaclustr is excited to offer support around a true open source option for customers who want to use the Kafka Schema Registry or REST proxy without the risk of restrictive licenses and lockouts,” said Paul Aubrey, Instaclustr’s Director of Product Management. “By working with Aiven to increase Protobuf’s support, we have been able to strengthen the Karapace project as a solid option in all applications. This is a significant step forward for Apache Kafka and the open source community.”
“Our goal with Karapace is to provide a truly open source alternative to Confluent’s Schema Registry and Kafka REST proxy,” said Soumya Bijjal, Aiven’s Director of Product Management. “We are excited to see Karapace gaining traction in the open source community, and Instaclustr is making a significant contribution to the code base with Protobuf support. Most of our Aiven for Apache Kafka users are using Karapace in production today, and we expect more Karapace users through Instaclustr.
