Refugees – Munich – Refugees from the Ukraine are examined for tuberculosis – Bavaria
Gauting (dpa) – In Gauting (Starnberg district), refugees from Ukraine were examined for tuberculosis on Saturday. This investigation is disastrous for the thousands of people housed in the Bavarian communal accommodations. A spokeswoman for the clinic said that around 60 Ukrainians living in a local accommodation were brought to the Asklepios Clinic for a screening.
Tuberculosis is an infectious bacterial disease that most commonly affects the lungs but can also affect other organs. It is more common in Eastern European countries than in Germany. According to the Infection Protection Act, those affected in shelters are obliged to present a medical certificate that there are no indications of contagious pulmonary tuberculosis. According to the Interior Ministry, this affects more than 6,000 Ukrainians in Bavaria. It’s only about people in shared accommodation. Anyone staying privately does not have to be examined.
The senior physician in the infectiology department of the clinic in Gauting, Marion Heiss-Neumann, said that infection via short contacts – in contrast to Covid-19 – is not particularly likely with tuberculosis. However, there is a relevant risk of infection in cramped conditions such as in communal accommodation. Tuberculosis is usually easily treatable. According to the clinic, no positive case was initially found on Saturday.
