According to the UN, the number of refugees fleeing Ukraine is 2.5 million
Filippo GrandiThe head of the UN refugee organization said on Friday that the number of people fleeing Ukraine has now reached 2.5 million, estimating that some two million people have been displaced within Ukraine.
He said the UN refugee agency needs about $ 500 million for its emergency work in Ukraine and neighboring countries, adding that it has so far received more than $ 300 million, of which nearly $ 200 million is from individuals, businesses and foundations.
Calling the war nonsensical, Grandi wrote in a tweet: “The number of refugees from Ukraine – tragically – has reached 2.5 million today. We also estimate that about two million people have been displaced within Ukraine. Millions will have to leave their homes because of this. Nonsensical war.”
Last Sunday, UNHCR Commissioner Filippo Grandi said more than 1.5 million refugees from Ukraine had arrived in neighboring countries in 10 days, describing the situation as “the fastest growing refugee crisis in Europe since World War II.”
Later, on Tuesday, the number of people who fled Ukraine rose to two million, according to the head of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees.
Head of European Union Foreign Policy Josep Borrell said earlier that the European Union should be prepared for five million people fleeing Ukraine during the ongoing conflict with Russia.
On 24 February, Russia launched a special operation in Ukraine in response to calls from Donetsk and the Luhansk People’s Republic to defend itself against increasing attacks by Ukrainian forces.
