More and more foreigners claimed as schools of Turismo de Portugal
Among foreigners who have applied for tourism courses in Portugal, the largest contingent is Angolan (228 applications), followed by Brazilians (98). But there are also candidates from the United States, Canada, several African countries, especially Portuguese-speaking, and increasingly Europeans (for example, French, Italians and Germans) who “see Portugal as a quality destination to study”.
More than half (58%) of the candidates are in the 12th year, but there are those who already have a degree or postgraduate degree. Anyway, these courses are specialization courses. “It appears that the sector is in fact regaining the dynamism sought by these people. Many who are already at a higher level come to do a specialization. These are comprehensive courses that enable many people to be trained very efficiently to enter the job market”.
Kitchen and pastry lead as
The Kitchen Management and Production course had 80 places, but demand was more than three times higher. It was the first option for 252 candidates. Pastry Management and Production had 78 vacancies, but was chosen by almost 200 candidates. In fact, all courses (with the exception of Food & Beverage Management) had much higher demand than the available places.
The responsible for the Training of Turismo de Portugal says that the courses are areas that the market needs more qualified rooms and services cover (in Portuguese and English), room service, cover the restaurant, room service hospitality.
“Schools have a structuring with companies, the contestation gives an answer – sometimes immediate, other times more the sectors that the sector most needs. “But it is necessary to captivate young people and we have a reinforcement of (pedagogical) offers also for September because we are very committed to captivating more people and qualifying them”.
Internship is a “dating” that has to go well
The hotel and tourism sector struggles with a lack of manpower and especially conceived. The challenge for companies is no longer just attracting, but above all, retaining talent. “It is a very demanding area and young people see a career in a different way, time, the possibility of reconciling the profession with personal and family life, among other aspects. Remuneration alone is no longer enough, although it is important”.
Therefore, there are many companies that “benefit packages” that can include insurance, opportunities to introduce units of the same group, travel, additional training, career progression. “In this sector, a young person who combines technical skills with leadership skills can quickly move up the hierarchy and have a career. And I believe that Portuguese companies are very focused on what they have to do to captivate and retain talent, which is the most precious asset for everyone today”, says Ana Paula Pais.
