Carlos Moedas cut the red ribbon official launch of Evolution Lisboa’s technology hub – Negócios
Evolution officially arrived in Portugal, with the inauguration of the technology hub on 24 de Julho, in Lisbon, a three-story building that was previously occupied by a nightclub. The ceremony was joined by David A Craelius, Evolution’s Group Chief Technology Officer and Carlos Moedas, Mayor of Lisbon, who cut the red ribbon to launch the technology hub. In the words of David Craelius, the company likes the people of Portugal and their culture, highlighting that Evolution is adept at a mixed culture.
150 to 200 Portuguese engineers. Despite a greater focus on the gaming industry being dedicated to online gambling and casinos, Evolution is a technology company at heart. The company has 10 engineering hubs across Europe. David Craelius says that what makes Evolution special are its solutions that integrate video with a real-time graphical interface, available on mobile devices. And to achieve that, hard engineering work is required, he points out.

Carlos Moedas was, the physicist of the ceremony, highlighted that being the president of the two digital worlds. He says that his accumulated experience in his career, as the European Commissioner for Research, Innovation and Science, came across the mother of the ecosystem where the diversity of cultures stands out and Lisbon is a unique place in Europe, “the career of innovation” . For the mayor, “if we only have people like us in the group, it won’t help to create anything different”. Defend the terribly different necessary people, with which creating things for other things is scientifically new.
In his welcoming words, Carlos Moedas congratulated Evolution for being a people-oriented company, something he sees as good for Lisbon. “This diversity is crucial for me, as Mayor of Lisbon. Lisbon is open, bring your friends from other countries that we are here”, closed his speech.
Evolution has more than 1,10 software engineers and a total of 13,000 people spread across nearly 20 locations worldwide. The company says the new engineering hub follows the ongoing expansion of the company’s development capability.
This hub will be home to a complete software development unit, responsible for creating a new generation of games for an online gambling industry. It is therefore planned to hire 103 people by the end of 2022, increasing to 140 at the end of 2023 and 150 at the end of the second quarter of 2024. Recruitment began during the summer of 2021. The focus will be on the areas of computer engineering and software development, namely programming in Scala (which the company recently launched a bootcamp) and JavaScript. It also says that it is looking for reinforcement for production such as its Site Reliability Engineering (SRE) and Quality Assurance (QA) equipment, with the aim of installing a complete equipment in Portugal, capable of ensuring the entire development and game process.
“We know that some of the largest companies in the world are based here, and although the market is highly competitive, it is also a sign that the most competent professionals are also in Portugal”, said Abílio Diz, Evolution’s communication leader in the national territory, in an interview with SAPO TEK.
The company said that the Lisbon hub is being built to serve the world, not just in terms of business, but by having an international team. Despite the participation being captured by Portuguese teams, it wants a multicultural team vision.
The company has a market share of around €20 billion and is listed on Nasdaq Nordix. Two of their most popular titles are Lightning Roulette and Crazy Times. However, only their games are provided on the B2B market, so many games are found through their operator partners. And as such, it does not control the number of players on each platform.
