6000 appointments per week : this is the figure announced by the City of Paris concerning the renewal of passports and identity cards. To process this request, the municipality will set up a new system.
10,000 additional slots by the start of summer
The appointment schedule, currently spread over six weeks, will increase to ten. In addition, an “exceptional and additional” mobilization of the district town halls will be put in place with the opening of hotlines.
Requests will be processed, by appointment, one Saturday per month, from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. “This will free up 10,000 additional slots by early summer, according to Emmanuel Gregoirefirst deputy mayor of Paris.
Finally, concerning the production of identity papers, the town hall explains that it recently encountered “problems with the functioning of the software. » The fleet of defective equipment should be renewed soon, in partnership with the National Agency for Security Titles (ANTS).
Declining production in the face of rising demand
the Covid-19 crisis, the National Agency for Security Credentials (ANTS) “is idling”, according to Emmanuel Grégoire. “Nationally, it is estimated that a drop of one million titles produced compared to normal, with a fall of 38% for passports and 18% for identity cards. A drop which has also been made known in Paris: of the 373,000 documents produced in 2019, 280,000 were produced in 2020, according to the town hall.
However, demand from individuals to obtain identity documents has not diminished. The Parisian elected official cited the pressing demand for identity documents as summer approaches, as well as the issue of the new identity card. Introduced last May, smaller and “very popular, it created a strong spontaneous demand. »
Added to this is the end of the extension to fifteen years of certain identity cards, as well as the expiration of the first biometric passports, issued towards the end of the 2000s. “A significant additional stock to manage”, which the town hall of Paris seems to be equipping to meet demand.
