Sweden takes first place in the table
The tenth session of Paralympic wheelchair curling took place on Tuesday afternoon at the National Aquatics Center. Sweden vs. Estonia, Latvia hosted Norway, while Slovakia faced Korea in this session. Sweden, Norway and Slovakia came out as winners of these matches.
Sweden against Estonia
Sweden stole a single point in the first end when the Estonian jumper Andrei Koitmae could only remove a Swedish counter with his double selection attempt.
In the second end, Estonia put a point on the board. They followed it up with a single steal in the third when the Swedish jumper Viljo Pettersson-Dahl failed with his last selection attempt.
Estonia led the match 2-1 after three finishes.
In the fourth, Sweden had a chance to take three points, but Pettersson-Dahl was heavy with his last attempt at a draw and Sweden had to settle for two.
The Scandinavians stole a single point in the fifth when Estonia’s Koitmae was heavy with their last draw attempt. After five finishes, Sweden led 4-2.
In the sixth, Estonia scored two points, partly due to two perfect shots by Koitmae, and leveled the match at 4-4.
Sweden tried to remove the seventh end to transfer the advantage of the last stone to the eighth end, but Pettersson-Dahl’s goal scorer remained after his last withdrawal and Sweden took a single point.
When we went into the eighth end, Sweden led 5-4 and Estonia had the club.
Sweden played a perfect finish without the advantage of the last stone and had a guarded stone in the eight-footer when Koitmae played his last selection attempt. He crushed a guard with it, gave up a steal of one and gave Sweden a 6-4 win.
After the match, Sweden’s leading player Kristina Ulander said, “I think we had the game under control, but they made some good stones and we got some pressure, but we solved it.”
When she commented on taking first place on the standings, she added, “It feels very good.”
Latvia against Norway
Norway changed their line-up for this match, and Ole Fredrik Syversen took on skipping tasks and threw the fourth stone, while Jostein Stordahl played the third stone and was the substitute.
Latvia took advantage of their last advantage in the first end and put two points on the board.
After extinguishing the second end, Norway responded with two of their own to equalize to 2-2.
In the fourth end, Latvia had a chance to score two points, but their skipping Polina Rozkova just missed her difficult promotion attempt and they had to settle for one.
In the fifth, Latvia stole two points when Norges Syversen did not succeed in his attempt to raise.
In the sixth, Norway scored three points and equalized to 5-5.
The team went into the eighth end with 6-5, Latvia led and Norway had the hammer.
Norway played an excellent eighth finish, which resulted in three points and an 8-6 victory for them.
Slovakia vs. Korea
Both teams were looking for their third victory in the competition when they played against each other in this session.
Slovakia stole a single at the first end when Korean quarterback Jang Jaehyuk smashed on a guard with his selection attempt.
In the second end, Jang was heavy with his last draw attempt and Korea gave up another single point.
After another steal in the third, Slovakia led 3-0.
In the fourth final, Slovakia stole another point when Korea’s Jang was unable to complete his difficult promotion attempt.
Korea came on the board with two points in the sixth end, making the score 5-2 in favor of Slovakia.
In the seventh end, Slovakia had a chance to score three points, but their fourth player Peter Zatko fell short with his last stone, and the Europeans had to settle for two.
With 7-2 on the board after seven finishes, Korea admitted defeat.
After his win, Slovakia’s leading player, Monika Kunkelova, said, “It was not a comfortable victory, it was a very hard work throughout the match. We had fewer mistakes than Korea, it made the difference today.”
