City of Salzburg – Traces of women in the city of Salzburg
At this year’s International Women’s Day event organized by the City of Salzburg, the focus is on the presentation of the publication “Frauenspuren”. 26 portraits of important women from the history of the city of Salzburg can be read on 124 pages. Life, work, memory and the search for traces are discussed in detail on two double pages each. The brochure was created in cooperation with the City Archives and the Women’s Office of the City of Salzburg. She accompanies the commemorative plaque project, which is not only being expanded, but also presented in a new, contemporary design in the style of the design guidelines of the city of Salzburg.
17 panels hang in the city
Women left their mark on history just as much as men did. However, women’s history is rarely found in the collective memory. A total of 17 commemorative plaques planned by the City of Salzburg’s Women’s Office commemorate women who have distinguished themselves through their commitment, their achievements or their outstanding skills. The plaques were attached to their homes and birthplaces or their places of work. The areas in which the honored women worked are very different. In addition to painters, writers and musicians, there are also entrepreneurs, women’s rights activists, doctors, actresses, scientists, opponents of the Nazi regime and women who care about the well-being of the city. Most of the commemorative plaques are located in the old town of Salzburg and are therefore suitable for walks in the footsteps of these great women.
Role models and pioneers
Looking at female pioneers also means taking stock. Where are we, what do we need? We bring extraordinary women in front of the curtain who have bravely embarked on new paths. Pioneers who helped write Salzburg’s history and shaped it significantly. As role models and pioneers, they motivate us today to take an active role in society with a critical spirit. “We want to show the diversity in the biographies of important women in Salzburg, who have often achieved great things against great resistance and despite all restrictions. We make the traces of these women visible – because in order to know where we are going, it is important to know where we come from,” says Anja Hagenauer, city councilor and responsible for women’s issues.
“We will continue to keep our eyes and ears open for other female personalities in the future – the project is constantly being expanded. Suggestions for important women who should be remembered are expressly welcome,” says Alexandra Schmidt from the Women’s Office of the City of Salzburg, initiator and coordinator of the project.
“You women, it is about their rights, their freedom, their happiness, you yourself must take the initiative to shape your life into a dignified existence.”
“We join Irma von Troll-Borostyáni in this appeal. The first women’s rights activist in Salzburg considered gender equality to be the greatest challenge of the 19th century – it has not lost its topicality today,” say the authors Sabine Veits-Falk, historian at the Salzburg City Archive, and the literary scholar Christa Gürtler.
