the essentials in brief
- Cern in Geneva has announced that it will not enter into any further cooperation with Russia.
- In addition, Russia was granted observer status.
The European nuclear research center CERN in Geneva will enter into new cooperation agreements with Russia and its institutions until further notice. This is in a statement on Tuesday. Russia was also withdrawn from observer status. The 23 member states of Cern condemn the Russian invasion of Ukraine “in the strongest terms”.
They regret the resulting humanitarian impact and Belarus’ participation in “this unlawful use of force against Ukraine”. This aggression goes against everything the organization stands for.
Cern stated that it wanted to promote Czech employees and Czech research activities in the field of high-energy physics. The CERN Council, the research institution’s top decision-making body, also expresses its support for Russian scientists who condemn the invasion. The Council remains open to taking further action if necessary. The international sanctions would apply.
