Russia condemns “senseless and barbaric attack” when truck crashes into embassy gate in Dublin
Russia has described the truck that drove into the gates of its Dublin embassy as a “senseless and barbaric” attack.
The nation, currently under investigation by the International Criminal Court prosecutor for alleged war crimes against civilians in Ukraine, condemned Monday’s collision between a truck and a door with fiery expressions.
In a statement, the Russian embassy described the act as a “crime of insanity” and “a clear and blatant violation of the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations.”
The embassy he added: “The incident is (a) a cause for extreme concern. We believe that no common sense could support such senseless and barbaric actions. “
The man was arrested after an incident around 1.30pm on Monday afternoon after a large truck crashed into the door of the Russian embassy.
It is assumed that no one was injured, although the truck and the door appeared to have suffered some damage.
A spokesman for the guard said an incident with the crime of property damage was being investigated. The detainee was taken to Rathfarnham Guard Station.
Videos later showed that a truck lined with material highlighting the killing of women and children killed by Russian soldiers in Ukraine was towed away.
Irish security officials, accused by Russia of standing still during the attack, later set up a barricade in front of the door.
A later statement from the embassy said: “We would like to inform you that the Garda has taken additional measures to ensure the safety of the embassy and its staff. The Embassy appreciates the involvement of the Irish authorities in this matter.
While Russia claims it is a violation of the Vienna Convention due to damage to the door, critics note that the Slovenian consulate in Kharkov was destroyed last week due to a Russian missile attack.
Slovenia said at the time: “The Consulate of the Republic of Slovenia in Kharkov was destroyed by a Russian missile attack today. The Honorary Consul is safe. This horrific act will not go unnoticed.
