Portugal expresses all confidence to the natural authorities of Guinea-Bissau – Observer
The Prime Minister, António Costa, this Saturday expressed all his confidence and solidarity with the legitimate authorities of Guinea-Bissau and said that his visit to the country also means “support for stability”.
Speaking to the press, after a bilateral meeting between the two delegations, António Costa expressed to the “legitimate, democratically elected authorities” Portugal’s trust, friendship and solidarity.
“We immediately condemned the events of February 1 and that we reaffirm our solidarity and our solidarity here means support for stability, because in today’s world conflicts have to be resolved by democratic means and not by any other way”, he said. António Costa, referring to the war in Ukraine.
On the 1st of February, the Guinean defense and security forces aborted an attempted coup d’état, which aimed to assassinate the head of state and members of the government.
“Unfortunately, today we are experiencing a very fierce, unimaginable military reality on the European continent and in those images that must be inspired to imagine the value of peace, of life and the value of having democratic institutions and all of us our freedom and freedom. have the necessary stability so that economic progress can exist and everyone can improve their quality of life”, highlighted António Costa.
The Portuguese prime minister notes that Portugal and Guinea-Bissau have a strategic contract of 60 million euros, which will be invested over the next few years, which will only produce effects that will bring about the “necessary stability”.
The head of the Guinean Government, Nuno Gomes Nabiam, stressed that António Costa’s visit to the country took place at a time when Guinea-Bissau was “in a somewhat complicated situation” due to the events of 1 February.
“This visit demonstrates the Portuguese Government’s solidarity with Guinea-Bissau and also demonstrates that the country is stable, there are guarantees of investment and that people can come here to work without any problem”, he said.
António Costa landed this Saturday in Bissau around 1:50 pm for a 24-hour visit, which also includes meetings today with the Portuguese community and the head of state, Umaro Sissoco Embaló.
On Sunday, before leaving for Cape Verde, António Costa will visit the English plot of the Bissau cemetery.
The prime minister was accompanied by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Augusto Santos Silva, the Minister of Defense, João Gomes Cravinho, the Minister of Environment and Climate Action, João Pedro Matos Fernandes, and the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs, Francisco André.
