Maltese Wrestler Gary Giordimaina Takes Gold Home | Sports
Maltese wrestler won gold at International Wrestling Tournament – England Wrestling Championships.
Among the Maltese contingent were four athletes, a referee, and coach Jesmond Giordimaina.
The athletes showed their skills against aggressive opposition, but one athlete – Gary Giordimaina – dominated his opposition by going through four fights that sparkled in his -57kg category, to later be in first place on the podium.
The competition, held in February at the Windsor Entertainment Center, saw athletes from various countries take to solving the issues on the mat, from Iranians to Russians and Indians.
People taking part in this competition are seeking qualification for the Commonwealth Games, which will take place later this year.
The format of the competition was ‘knockout style’, which means that one defeat may be enough to see an athlete out.
Athletes Nico Zarb and Nathaniel Buttiġieġ D’Ugo lost their respective matches against the group winner and as a result ended up in a repechage match. Nico Zarb took the victory but subsequently lost the next match. The final athlete – Adam Vella – missed the opening round against the group’s Bronze medal.
The contingent from the Malta Amateur Wrestling Federation also introduced an international referee, one of whom took part in several finals at the time, with the aim of qualifying for a place in the Commonwealth as a referee.
