Goodbye neutrality, San Marino also takes sides against Russia
More than Switzerland it was a planetary symbol of neutrality. Because, in the parts of Mount Titano, taking sides on one side or the other on war disputes has always been a taboo.
But the invasion of Russia into Ukraine broke a centuries-old principle and so, in the wake of international outrage, San Marino too – for the first time in its history – decided to take sides and vote in favor of sanctions against the Russia.
The rulers of the Ancient Republic speak of “active neutrality” but, beyond the dialectical balancing act, it is still an epochal turning point.
San Marino does not have its own army and does not possess weapons, so it would be impossible online to intervene in a conflict other than with restrictions. However, it should be specified that in addition to remaining neutral during the two great wars of the twentieth century, in the last century the Republic did not adhere to the Cuban embargo.
The gesture of San Marino was highly anticipated by the international community after relations between Titan and Russia were considered very good. In fact, in the critical days of the pandemic, San Marino turned to Russia to import massive quantities of Sputnik vaccine (produced by Moscow and not recognized by EMA and FDA) and an intense dialogue was underway between the two countries on the possibility of traveling without a visa.
