Ukrainian emergency AVSI-supported campaign to aid Ukrainians fleeing the war intensifies
The ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine is causing an increasing number of civilian casualties, destroying livelihoods and civilian infrastructure, years of housing, schools and health facilities. Thanks to the collaboration with the local Emmaus organization, the AVSI Foundation has maintained a relationship of closeness with the local population since 2014 and today provides immediate help to people fleeing to Poland and Romania. At the border with Romania, emergency activities are carried out in collaboration with the local partner FDP-Protagoniști în educație and the Romanian government. In Siret, AVSI offers initial support to vulnerable people and displaced persons through the supply of basic food and non-food items and psychological support activities. At the border with Poland, emergency activities are carried out in collaboration with the local partner AVSI Polska, the Italian-Polish Chamber of Commerce and Caritas Lviv. Support for displaced people arriving in Lviv consists in the provision of basic medicines and food and non-food items and psychological support. The situation on the border of Poland and Romania People fleeing in these first days seem to pass quickly from the countries of first reception to reach their final destinations. For now, the most acute needs remain at the border points with Romania and Poland. In Lviv the conflict at the time was not as dramatic as in other parts of the country, but due to its proximity to the Polish border, this Ukrainian city has become the destination for many displaced people leaving the eastern part of the country. In Romania the main gateway for the displaced Ukrainian population in the Suceava region is Siret. Since the start of the crisis, the Siret border has been seeing a steady increase in the number of people entering the country and forecasts for the next period confirm this growing trend. To respond to the growing needs, the Romanian government is asking for the help of local organizations to provide essential goods to a center created a few kilometers from the Siret border. This center will be used to provide an answer to the needs of people in transit and will also immediately constitute a reserve for possible new arrivals and on the rise.
