Sweden Plugin EV Share 52% In February, Kia leads Niro
Sweden’s share of plug-in electric vehicles reached 51.6% in February 2022, an increase from 34.8% on an annual basis. Full electrics took a 25.6% share, dramatic growth from 6.1% on an annual basis. The total car market volume was 21,136, about a 7% decrease from the last two years. Kia Niro was Sweden’s best-selling electricity in February.
February’s combined results of 51.6% consisted of 25.6% full battery electricity (BEV) and 26.0% plug-in hybrids (PHEVs). This continues the shift, since mid-2021, towards parity, from the previously dominant PHEV landscape. We can expect BEV to dominate PHEV again next month when Tesla’s ships enter (see chart below for annual patterns).
Only diesel powertrains took a share of 13.5% in February 2022, a decrease from 20.3% on an annual basis. At the same time, only petrol took 24.4%, a decrease from 37.2% on an annual basis. Combustion-only powertrains are therefore now combined at 37.9% of the market, from 57.5% on an annual basis, a dramatic reduction.
Sweden’s favorite BEV
The evergreen Kia Niro took the top spot again in February, remarkable considering that it is about to be refreshed (and get even better). Its bigger and newer sibling, the Kia EV6, took 9th place.
Polestar 2 did its best performance in a long time, took third place behind the Tesla Model Y and scratched just before Volkswagen ID.4, last year’s winner. ID.4 may still be in the hangover from the December press, but will probably challenge again for the top spot in the coming months.
The results for the last quarter (below) give us a more even picture of the race.
Note that, just like in Norway, the Tesla Model Y has already redesigned its Model 3 sibling. Model Y already took Sweden’s second place in the last quarter of 2021 and will challenge even harder when Tesla’s Berlin Gigafactory gains momentum. Does VW have a plan to increase the volumes of ID.4 to keep up? How about Kia?
Sight
Sweden has started the year with plugins strong, with January and February already accumulating a 52.2% share. This is with last year’s BEV leader, VW ID.4, still in a partial hangover, and Tesla has not yet appeared with full force.
Given this, I would expect March to see over 55% plugin share, with BEVs over 30% share.
From now on, I would guess that the last months of 2022 could see close to 80% plugin share and the year in total close to 60%. How do you see it going? Which new BEV models are you looking forward to, which may prove to be popular in Sweden? Please share your thoughts in the comments.
